National Taiwan Normal University Symphony Orchestra
Established in 1975, the 90-seat National Taiwan University
Symphony Orchestra is made up entirely of students, who meet twice
weekly for practice. In addition to the educational aim of training
a new generation of outstanding musical talent and cultivating
audience music appreciation, the organization has the promotion of
art and culture as its mission.
Over the years, under the able direction of both guest conductors
and dedicated faculty, the orchestra has steadily gained in fame and
stature. This trend was continued when Apo Ching-Hsin Hsu returned
from the United States to take over the mantle in 2003. Since then
the orchestra has attained to ever-new heights of mastery and
perfection.
Performances have not been confined to masterpieces of the
classical, paradigmatic and canonical repertoire, but have been
extended to include pieces by contemporary Taiwanese artists, a
special feature of this full symphonic orchestra with a national
reputation.
Its annual cycle of activities includes a full performance
schedule, including appearances at the National Concert Hall, a
student competition called “Concerto Night,” a performance circuit
of school campuses at all educational levels, as well as occasional
chamber, chorus and operatic performances.
Young and energetic undergraduate musicians, the orchestra
members boast discipline, enthusiasm, team spirit and camaraderie,
as they strive to learn and expand their musical horizons. Upon
graduation a number of them continue to pursue higher education
degrees both in Taiwan and abroad, others enter the professional
performing arena, while still others begin their career in music
education.
